5/24/2023 0 Comments Dog Days by P.J. Reed![]() ![]() ![]() As a result of a ‘feast and famine’ lifestyle, wolves need to cope with a highly variable nutrient intake requiring an adaptable metabolism, which is still functional in our modern-day dogs. Wolves can experience prolonged times of famine during low prey availability while, after a successful hunt, the intake of foods and nutrients can be excessive. Data on the feeding ecology of wolves indicate that wolves are true carnivores consuming a negligible amount of vegetal matter. We discuss the foraging ecology of wild wolves and calculate the nutrient profiles of fifty diets reported in the literature. This has led to the classification of dogs as omnivores, but the origin of these ‘omnivorous’ traits has, hitherto, been left unexplained. ![]() Compared to the carnivorous cat, modern-day dogs differ in several digestive and metabolic traits that appear to be more associated with omnivorous such as man, pigs and rats. Domestic dogs diverged from grey wolves between 13 000 and 17 000 years ago when food waste from human settlements provided a new niche. ![]()

Oryx and Crake is Atwood’s only novel featuring a male, first-person protagonist (named Snowman) the other two novels vacillate between voices, with the third in the series having the most variety of narrators. As always, I aim for brevity when I write for this site, so pardon my simplifications. I read all three books over the course of a week and a half, finishing just fifteen minutes prior to the composition of this piece. Facebook was blowing up recently with news of Darren Aronofsky adapting the three books into an HBO miniseries, so I decided it was time. I was given the next two books as gifts over the years as they came out, but would set them gently next to the first, like glass miniatures on a shelf. I read Oryx and Crake when it came out in 2003, certainly never anticipating two follow-up novels. ![]() ![]() Recently, I was at an airport here in South Florida, and so was Temple Grandin. ![]() She’s an extraordinary woman who happens to have autism, whose life story, books, and advocacy, have done so much for mainstreaming the acceptance of people on the spectrum.
